Outdoor Burning

All recreational firesgas fire pits, and open pile burning require a NLTFPD Operational Burn Permit.

  • All Operational Burn Permits require an on-site fire inspection.
    • Fire inspections for operational burn permits may be scheduled online here.  
    • A permit fee ($120) will be charged to the applicant, once scheduled online. 
    • All outdoor burning on Red Flag Days is not permissible

Open Burning (slash pile or needle pile burning) 

Status: Permissible with permit. 

  • Open pile burning of dead woody material (slash) or needles. 
    • 4A extinguisher, a charged water hose with nozzle, and long hand tools or wildland fire tools must be within reach. 
    • Piles cannnot exceed 2' in height and 3' diameter (2' x 3'). 
    • 2' noncombustible zone (mineral soil) must be around perimeter of pile. 
    • 30' separation from storage and vegetation, including shrubs and tree canopies. 
    • 50' separation from structures. 
    • Only permissible to burn one pile at a time. 
    • Burning may be conducted from 6am-3pm on Burn Days
    • Burning is not permissible with sustained 15 mph winds

Recreational Fires (Wood fire in non-combustible container and mesh screen)

Status: Permissible with permit.

Exception: Not Permissible on Short Term Rental Properties (STRs). STRs with recreational fires will be cited on site. 

  • Wood fire must be within a non-combustible container and a 1/8” mesh screen to prevent broadcasting of wood embers and flame spread. 
    • 30' separation from combustibles, structures, and vegetation, including pine needles. 
    • Charged water hose with nozzle and a 4A extinguisher within reach. 
    • Can only burn fire wood. 

Gas Fire Pits 

Status: Permissible with permit.

  • A predesigned gas fire pit connected to either natural gas or a propane cylinder.  
  • Manufacturer specifications must be reviewed and approved by the Fire District before permit issuance. 

BBQ's

Status: Permissible without permit. 

  • Propane, natural gas, or charcoal. 
  • Must follow manufacturer specifications.

Fire Restrictions Lifted & Open Public Burning Starts October 17, 2025, in Incline Village & Crystal Bay, NV. 

Open Public Burning 10.17.2025

With the arrival of moisture, higher humidity, and winter weather conditions, effective Friday, October 17, 2025, outdoor burning is permissible in Incline Village and Crystal Bay, NV.

Permits for open burning of pine needles, slash piles, and recreational fire pits are available Monday through Friday.

  Guidelines for open burning are:

  • Permit is valid for open burning only at the address listed and only for materials authorized
  • Permit holder shall visit www.nltfpd.org prior to any burning activity to determine if it is an approved Burn Day
  • No open burning is permitted on No Burn Days as determined by the Fire District
  • Open burning starts at 6:00 a.m. and all piles must be extinguished by 3:00 p.m.
  • Provide a thirty-minute fire watch after extinguishing any fire
  • Have a charged garden hose, a 4A extinguisher and hand tools nearby
  • Keep pine needle and slash piles small and manageable
  • An adult must constantly attend fire
  • Clear a 30-foot radius noncombustible area around all fires
  • Keep fires away from any overhanging branches
